Video Quick Tip: How To Communicate When You're Crabby

I had a mom ask me the other day, "How do you talk to your partner when you are crabby?"

I'm Catherine O'Brien of HappyWithBaby.com and this is a common complaint or concern that I get when I'm working with couples in my practice here in Sacramento and in workshops and other classes and events that I do.

The thing is: we all get crabby and we all get irritable and we get frustrated and we might say something that doesn't come out of our mouths the right way.

The fact is, you need to look at what's going on in your life that has you feeling this way. How are you (or aren’t you) taking care of yourself, that you're to this point? That you’re this overloaded?

So, that's my question for you, because it is going to happen.

Maybe check in with your partner and say, "Hey, I'm feeling crabby. I'm feeling irritated. I'm frustrated. My tank is on empty and I need some help with some self-care."

Even if you just need to take a 5 or 10 minute break to cool off and then come back and have a conversation with them then. Sometimes, something comes out of our mouth and you need to just say, "You know what, I'm cranky, I'm tired. Let me take a break and I'll come back and then let's talk about what I need to talk about."

So, I hope this helps and please, I know how hard it is as a parent to take care of yourself but please do. Your children and your partner need you too!

If you're having trouble finding ways for self-care, then please give me a call or send me an email.  I'll be happy to help find some resources and give you some support. Take care!
